Winterborne Farringdon is the group parish council for the five Dorset parishes of Bincombe, Whitcombe, Winterborne Came, Winterborne Herringston and Winterborne Monkton. The parishes are are situated in the countryside between Dorset’s county town of Dorchester to the north and Weymouth & Portland to the south. The parishes consist of mainly open countryside; the rural population is concentrated around the hamlets which the five parishes are named after. The parish of Bincombe also contains an urban area along its boundary with Weymouth, from where it takes the majority of its population.

The parish council is named after the abandoned village of Winterborne Farringdon which lies near the centre of the council’s area in the modern day parish of Winterborne Came. Farringdon was abandoned as early as 1662, and today the only visible remnant of the village’s existence is a rebuilt fragment of wall belonging to St German’s church. See the location of Winterborne Farringdon on a late nineteenth century 6 inches:mile map.
